Fiji Weighs Valelevu Ground for New National Hospital in CWM Redevelopment

The Fijian Cabinet has decided to conduct an in-depth analysis of the Valelevu Ground as a prospective site for the new national hospital. This determination follows a comprehensive multi-criteria evaluation of various potential locations, forming a pivotal part of the larger CWM Hospital Redevelopment Project.

The establishment of this new facility is considered essential to the nationwide infrastructure master plan aimed at modernizing and expanding Fiji’s national referral hospital. The initiative has garnered strong support from the Australian Government, which is providing significant grant funding to facilitate critical upgrades at the existing CWM Hospital.

The first phase of these renovations is currently underway, focusing on necessary repairs and improvements such as addressing roof leaks, enhancing acute wards, and upgrading potable water storage and sewerage systems. The completion of these essential upgrades is anticipated by early 2026.

As part of the ongoing redevelopment, the second phase will prioritize upgrades to ensure that the CWM Hospital remains operational while a comprehensive long-term assessment of its future development is undertaken. Additionally, Cabinet announced plans to establish a new radiotherapy center specifically for cancer treatment at a separate location within the CWM complex. The World Bank has been designated to oversee the construction of this facility, ensuring that cancer patients will have convenient access to both clinical and non-clinical services, benefitting from existing infrastructure.

The financial commitment from international partners is noteworthy, with backing from the World Bank, Asian Development Bank (ADB), and the OPEC Fund for the ongoing Public Health Infrastructure Transformation (PHIT) project. Furthermore, the Ministry of Finance, in association with Australia, is actively engaged in discussions with other multilateral banks to secure additional financing to support the continued development of the hospital.

This initiative represents significant progress in improving healthcare infrastructure in Fiji, demonstrating a collaborative effort to enhance medical services and ensure better access to essential health resources for the population.
