Major General Ro Jone Kalouniwai, Commander of the Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF), has stated that the military is awaiting the Government’s decision regarding the possible deployment of troops to Gaza. This comes after the United States extended an invitation for Fiji to participate in a peacekeeping mission amid the continuing conflict in the region. The Minister for Defence, Pio Tikoduadua, has yet to make a confirmation regarding Fiji’s involvement.

Kalouniwai emphasized that the ultimate decision will lie with the Government. He noted the significant differences that a mission in Gaza would present compared to Fiji’s historical peacekeeping endeavors, which have largely been conducted under United Nations mandates for roughly the last 40 to 50 years.

“This is a different scenario,” he remarked, acknowledging the unique challenges that such a mission could entail. Highlighting the necessity for careful planning, he stated that comprehensive preparation, including capability assessments and consultations, would be essential before any troop commitments could be made.

“I’m not saying that we are confident of going. There’s a lot that needs to be done,” he pointed out, stressing the importance of ensuring the military is adequately equipped and ready for such an operation.

Moreover, Major General Kalouniwai indicated that ongoing discussions will occur should the Government decide to accept the invitation. “We prepare. And if the government says go, then it’s a go. If it doesn’t, then we don’t,” he concluded, reflecting a cautious but committed approach to the potential mission.

This situation underscores the complexities of international peacekeeping efforts and exemplifies the thoughtful deliberations that are essential before any military commitment is made. Fiji’s longstanding experience in peacekeeping can bring valuable insights should the Government opt for participation in this unprecedented mission, offering a message of hope for stability in the region.
