The Fijian government is collaborating with the Fijian Competition and Consumer Commission (FCCC) to finalize recommendations regarding Energy Fiji Limited’s (EFL) proposed tariff adjustments. Minister for Finance, Commerce and Business Development, Esrom Immanuel, confirmed that discussions are actively progressing as part of efforts to advance this process.
During the recent 21-day review of electricity tariffs, the FCCC received 975 submissions, with 51 percent indicating support for an adjustment. The Commission has proposed a 24.2 percent adjustment compared to EFL’s initial request for a 37 percent increase, although the final decision is pending further consultations.
Minister Immanuel expressed satisfaction with the current progress, emphasizing that he will work closely with the FCCC to implement the necessary actions. He stated, “I was out of the country, but I saw it, and probably starting this week, we will collaborate more with them on how we go about putting that into action.”
Additionally, Minister for Public Works, Transport, and Meteorological Services Ro Filipe Tuisawau affirmed the government’s commitment to supporting EFL’s capital development plans. He mentioned ongoing discussions regarding necessary upgrades for facilities involved in transmission, generation, and distribution.
In response to public feedback, the FCCC has postponed its final decision until April 30th. This extension intends to give EFL more time to investigate financing options and potential support measures in collaboration with the government. This proactive approach hopes to balance the needs of both the company and consumers while ensuring energy sustainability in Fiji moving forward.
