A call has been made for the creation of a specialized court dedicated to handling drug offences in response to the escalating impact of narcotics on communities in Fiji. Watisoni Bola, the representative for the Vuya district, expressed his concerns during a consultation on the proposed Narcotics Bill held at Naulumatua House in Bua.
Mr. Bola emphasized that the urgency and seriousness of drug-related cases necessitate a swift judicial response. He advocated for the establishment of such a court to ensure that cases are processed efficiently, minimizing unnecessary delays. This proposed system aims to provide a consistent approach to sentencing, which would foster fairness, transparency, and equality within the legal framework.
Highlighting the burden on local communities, Mr. Bola pointed out that families are increasingly suffering due to rising instances of addiction and associated criminal activities. He asserted that while strict measures against traffickers and users are crucial, rehabilitation should also play a vital role in addressing substance abuse challenges.
Establishing a dedicated drug court, Mr. Bola argued, would not only enhance case management and reduce existing backlogs but also convey a decisive message that drug-related offences will be met with serious consequences. This approach reflects a balanced perspective, seeing the need for stringent law enforcement while simultaneously supporting recovery efforts for individuals grappling with addiction.
