Weather Update: A Drizzle of Drama Ahead
Issued by the National Weather Forecasting Centre Nadi at 12:35 PM on Thursday, January 23, 2025
Hold onto your umbrellas, Fiji! Our skies are about to turn moody with a touch of drama, as a moist east to northeast wind flows in, accompanied by a low-pressure trough shimmying over from the southwest. It looks like we’re in for a splashy time with clouds and showers making their entrance later today!
Here’s what to expect until midnight tomorrow:
For the Navua-Suva-Nausori, Tailevu-Ra-Naitasiri regions, and neighboring islands like Kadavu and Taveuni, put on the shades because it’s about to get cloudy. There will be a chance of showers and the kind of thunderstorms that could make a dramatic entrance. Watch out for isolated heavy showers crashing onto the scene, which might just turn the low-lying areas into mini water parks!
For the rest of Fiji: Expect a mix of partly cloudy skies with the occasional shower and maybe even a thunderstorm throwing in a dramatic performance. Yes, those heavy falls do have a knack for showing up, and flash flooding might just decide to join the party in flood-prone regions.
In the meantime, prepare for a steamy day with temperatures soaring to a sizzling 33-35 degrees Celsius. So yes, it will be hot and humid enough to make you question your life choices—like why did I wear jeans today?
Moderate east to northeast winds will be gusting about, especially around those heavy falls and thunderstorms. The seas might get a touch rougher, too, so watch your sea legs!
Looking ahead to Saturday: A little more rain and a few thunderstorms will pop up over Yasawa Group, Northern, interior, and eastern Viti Levu, while the rest of the regions will experience a mixed bag of partly cloudy skies with those pesky isolated showers and thunderstorms. Heavy falls seem to be on everyone’s guest list once again, so keep your raincoat handy!
For the specific regions:
Navua / Suva / Nausori: Expect clouds with showers, plus a sprinkle of thunderstorms because why not?
Nadi / Lautoka / Ba: It’s that time of year again—partly cloudy with some afternoon or evening showers and the occasional spectacular thunderstorm.
Sigatoka/Coral Coast: Better pack your rain gear! It’s cloudy with showers and a thunderstorm ensemble.
Yasawa/Mamanuca Group: Buckle up for a rollercoaster of clouds, showers, and a thunderstorm showcase!
Labasa and Savusavu: Both of you can expect partly cloudy skies with afternoon or evening showers and the dramatic thunderstorm cameo.
The Lau and Lomaiviti Group, as well as Kadavu: Cloudy periods with some showers and dramatic thunderstorms. Nothing says “tropical paradise” like a good ole thunderstorm, right?
Lastly, for the island of Rotuma: It’s a bit cloudy over there with some showers and isolated thunderstorms. Looks like they’re not missing out on the excitement!
So, brace yourselves for a day (and weekend) filled with weather theatrics. Stay dry and safe out there, Fiji!
