Weather Update: The Great Trough Chronicles

Issued from the National Weather Forecasting Centre in Nadi at 3:30 PM on Saturday, March 8, 2025.

Situation: We’ve got a sluggish trough of low pressure lounging over the Northern and Eastern parts of the country like it just got back from a long vacation and is refusing to leave the party. Expect a few clouds and showers to hang around and ruin that perfectly good picnic you had planned for the next few days. Meanwhile, we’ve got a breeze that’s strutting in from the southeast to the northwest, probably wondering where it left its sunglasses.

Forecast to midnight tomorrow for the Fiji group:
Expect occasional showers, sometimes heavy enough to make it rain cats and dogs—er, I mean, heavy at times—and a few thunderstorms over the Northern Division, Lau, and Lomaiviti groups.

If you’re in Sigatoka, Serua-Namosi, Navua-Suva-Nausori, Tailevu, Naitasiri, Ra, Yasawa, Kadavu, or those cheeky smaller islands nearby, get ready for some cloudy periods and a sprinkle of showers to keep things interesting.

For the rest of you, it’ll be sunny with just a hint of isolated afternoon or evening showers. But don’t be surprised if the sky decides to show up uninvited with afternoon or evening thunderstorms featuring some heavy rainfall.

Heads up for those in vulnerable areas: localized heavy falls may lead to flash flooding. Keep your floaties handy! Moderate to fresh winds are blowing through, and the seas are putting on a bit of a show—moderate to rough, so hold onto your hats and maybe a life jacket.

Outlook for Monday: More of the same, folks! Some showers and those lovely isolated thunderstorms are planning a reunion over the Northern Division, Lau, and Lomaiviti groups.

In Navua / Suva / Nausori: Expect cloudy periods with a sprinkle of showers, and the afternoon or evening thunderstorms might just want to drop by with their own heavy showers.

For Nadi / Lautoka / Ba: Looking fine apart from those sneaky isolated afternoon or evening showers and their heavy downpour antics.

For Sigatoka/Coral Coast: Cloudy again with some showers, and don’t be surprised if the thunderstorms decide to crash the party in the afternoon or evening.

Tavua/Rakiraki: Fine most of the day, except those annoying afternoon or evening showers and heavy thunderstorms trying to steal the show.

Yasawa/Mamanuca group: Cloudy days ahead with some light showers, while everything else outside Yasawa is looking pretty good, except for the occasional afternoon shower.

Labasa and Savusavu: Expect an outpouring of occasional showers, strong enough to make you think twice about leaving your umbrella at home.

Kadavu: Just a mild showing of lazy clouds and some showers expected.

For Rotuma: The not-so-shy trough continues to bring occasional showers and those pesky thunderstorms along with moderate to fresh northwesterly winds.

Outlook for Monday: Same story, more occasional showers and the chance of uninvited thunderstorms.

Stay dry, stay safe, and keep your umbrellas within reach!
