The Fiji Meteorological Service has issued warnings for strong winds, heavy rain, and flash floods as Tropical Depression TD03F continues to affect weather patterns across the nation. The strong wind alert applies to Vanua Levu, Taveuni, and the nearby smaller islands, including the Northern Lau Group. A heavy rain warning and flash flood warning are active for the entirety of the Fiji Group.
As of 3 PM local time, Tropical Depression TD03F was located roughly 620 kilometers west-northwest of Yasawa-i-Rara, about 800 kilometers west of Labasa, and is slowly moving east-southeast at approximately 10 kilometers per hour. An associated system with active rain bands is expected to impact the Fiji Group well into Thursday.
According to the forecast until midnight, fresh to strong northerly winds, averaging up to 50 kilometers per hour with gusts possibly reaching 70 kilometers per hour, are anticipated for Vanua Levu, Taveuni, and the adjacent smaller islands, along with the Northern Lau Group, from later today through Thursday. Additionally, rough sea conditions are expected in these locations.
Other regions may experience moderate to fresh winds from the north to southeast, becoming gusty in areas of heavy rain, alongside moderate to rough seas. Rainfall is projected to be heavy at times, with thunderstorms likely in the Yasawa and Mamanuca Groups, Northern Viti Levu, Vanua Levu, Taveuni, and the Lomaiviti and Lau Groups. Other areas may see occasional rain with isolated instances of heavier downpours.
While rainfall is expected to taper off to showers and begin clearing from the west by tomorrow, the Fiji Meteorological Service cautions that persistent heavy rainfall can lead to flash flooding, particularly in low-lying and flood-prone areas. Residents are urged to stay vigilant and prepared for changing weather conditions as the storm progresses.
