A heavy rain warning is currently in effect for Fiji’s Northern division, while a heavy rain alert extends to the Central and Eastern divisions, as well as the Yasawa group. The Fiji Meteorological Service has indicated that a slow-moving trough of low pressure is causing significant cloud cover, rain, and showers across the Fiji group.
Fortunately, this weather system is expected to slowly dissipate by later today. In the Northern division, residents can anticipate occasional to periods of rain that may be heavy at times, alongside a few thunderstorms. However, conditions should improve to light showers as the day progresses.
Officials warn that persistent heavy rainfall could lead to flash flooding in low-lying or flood-prone areas. Residents in the Central Division—which includes Suva, Nausori, Tailevu, Serua-Namosi, interior Serua-Namosi, and Naitasiri—along with those in the Eastern Division, Lomaiviti, and Lau groups, should remain vigilant for occasional rain, which may also be heavy at times, with the possibility of thunderstorms.
On a hopeful note, the expected clearing of rain later today offers prospects for drier weather, allowing communities to recover from the recent heavy rainfall. This is a reminder of the importance of preparedness and staying informed during such weather events to ensure safety and minimize risks.
