The Fiji Meteorology Service has announced a welcome change in weather, with rain expected to ease beginning Saturday. Currently, an active trough of low pressure is bringing clouds and rain across the Fiji group, a situation that is anticipated to continue until Sunday.
According to the meteorology office, residents can expect varying periods of rain, with heavy showers and some thunderstorms affecting many areas. However, the rain is forecasted to gradually clear from the west starting Saturday.
At present, the western and northern coastal regions of Viti Levu are experiencing strong northwest winds, with average speeds ranging from 38 km/h to 47 km/h, and gusts potentially reaching 74 km/h. Areas affected by these conditions include Sigatoka, Nadi, Lautoka, Ba, Tavua, and Rakiraki, alongside the Yasawa and Mamanuca groups, as well as other northern islands such as Vanua Levu and Taveuni.
The winds are expected to subside to moderate levels and shift to southerly and northwesterly directions from later Friday. However, the forecasts warn of localized heavy rainfall coupled with thunderstorms that could lead to flash flooding in low-lying and flood-prone regions.
As communities look ahead, the gradual improvement in weather conditions may bring relief and the opportunity for residents and businesses to recover and resume outdoor activities after the wet period.
Overall, while the current weather poses challenges, the promise of clearer skies beginning Saturday offers hope for better days ahead in Fiji.
