Fiji Weather Alert: Heavy Rains and Flash Flooding Ahead!

Spread the love

Fiji is bracing for increased rainfall in the coming days, with the potential for flash flooding. The Fiji Meteorological Service has issued a heavy rain alert that is currently in effect for the Northern Division, Yasawa, and Mamanuca Groups. This alert also encompasses the western and northern regions of Viti Levu, specifically Momi to Nadi, Lautoka, Ba, Tavua, and Rakiraki.

According to the weather office, a trough of low pressure, bringing with it clouds and rain, is currently impacting Fiji’s western and northern areas and is anticipated to extend its effects across the rest of the country shortly. The nation is currently experiencing a flow of north to easterly winds.

The forecast indicates occasional rain—for which some areas may experience heavy downpours—as well as thunderstorms, particularly affecting the Northern Division, Yasawa, Mamanuca Groups, Viti Levu, and surrounding smaller islands. Isolated thunderstorms with heavy rainfall could lead to flash flooding in low-lying areas, coupled with risks of wet roads and reduced visibility.

As the country prepares for these weather conditions, it’s important for residents to stay informed and take necessary precautions, ensuring safety during the expected heavy rain and potential flash flooding events. The situation underscores the resilience and preparedness of the Fijian people, who have historically adapted to such weather scenarios.
