Fiji Weather Alert: Heavy Rain and Thunderstorms May Bring Flood Risks

The Fiji Meteorological Service has issued a warning regarding incoming weather changes that are expected to bring extensive rain and thunderstorms across the country later today. As the trough of low pressure, currently situated to the west of Fiji, advances eastward, associated clouds and showers are anticipated to affect most regions.

In a statement released from the National Weather Forecasting Centre in Nadi, the department advised residents to prepare for intermittent rain that will impact areas such as Serua-Namosi, Navua-Suva-Nausori, and Tailevu-Naitasiri-Ra. Additionally, regions including the northern Bua, Cakaudrove, Taveuni, Kadavu, Lau, and the Lomaiviti group should brace for occasional thunderstorms, with heavy downpours likely to develop as the day progresses.

The forecast indicates that while some regions may experience brief periods of fine weather, localised heavy rainfall poses the risk of flash flooding, particularly in low-lying and flood-prone areas. As we turn to the upcoming Saturday, officials predict ongoing rain and isolated thunderstorms across the Serua-Namosi, Navua-Suva-Nausori, Tailevu-Naitasiri-Ra, and other affected regions, with significant rainfall expected in parts of Southern Bua and the Lomaiviti groups.

This weather pattern is a reminder of the need for communities to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions as they prepare for the potential impacts of heavy rainfall. While the immediate forecast may bring challenges, residents are encouraged to note that such weather phenomena can also benefit the environment by replenishing water supplies crucial for agriculture.

It highlights the resilience of the Fijian community in the face of nature’s unpredictability, emphasizing the importance of readiness and unity during such times.
