The National Weather Forecasting Centre in Nadi has issued a heavy rain alert for the entire Fiji Group as an active trough of low pressure draws near from the west. Meteorologists predict that this weather system, bringing cloud and rainfall, will affect Fiji from later today until Thursday, January 1.

Residents can expect cloudy conditions with brief showers today in regions such as Ba, Tavua, Vatukoula, Ra, Rakiraki, parts of Tailevu, and the inland areas of Ba, Ra, and Naitasiri. Meanwhile, other areas may enjoy mainly fine weather in the morning, but afternoon showers and thunderstorms are likely to develop.

As the day progresses, rain and thunderstorms are expected to emerge from the west and incrementally spread across the entire country. Showers will become more frequent and intensify into substantial rainfall, with localized heavy downpours potentially leading to flash flooding in low-lying and flood-prone regions.

Looking ahead to Wednesday, forecasters caution that occasional rain—heavy at times—along with thunderstorms could impact most areas, further heightening the risk of flash floods. Residents are advised to stay vigilant and be prepared for rapidly changing weather conditions as the trough approaches.

This situation highlights the importance of preparedness in the face of natural events, reminding communities to be proactive in safeguarding lives and property during severe weather conditions.
