A new career center has been proposed in Fiji to address the country’s labor shortages. This initiative, led by Natural Waters of Viti Pte Limited, the producers of FIJI Water, is expected to replicate the successful model used in California, according to Marigold Moody, assistant general counsel for the South Pacific.

At the recent Top Executives Conference 2024 held at the Sofitel Fiji Resort and Spa in Denarau, Ms. Moody emphasized the importance of this special project as a significant investment in Fiji’s workforce. She noted that the initiative is aimed at skill development to bridge the current gap in available, appropriately skilled labor, particularly for Pacific Island seafarers who operate the company’s vessels.

With FIJI Water’s substantial investment of over FJ$140 million to enhance its operational capacity by approximately 47%, Ms. Moody highlighted the pressing need for a larger workforce. Looking ahead to 2025, the company plans to collaborate with Fiji National University to establish the career center in Suva, which will focus on workforce training that aligns with employers’ needs.

Moody stated that the program will ensure participants are job-ready by designing curricula tailored to meet local business demands. Furthermore, the career center will not only support FIJI Water but will also create opportunities for other members of the manufacturing and marine industries to participate through an industry council.

This initiative represents a promising step towards not only alleviating labor shortages but also enhancing career prospects for individuals in Fiji. By investing in skills development, the career center could foster a more capable workforce, generating a positive ripple effect on the broader economy.

In summary, a career center proposed by the makers of FIJI Water aims to build Fiji’s workforce through targeted skills training, addressing labor shortages and creating pathways for upward mobility in various industries. This initiative holds great potential to enhance job readiness and support economic growth in the region.
