A new career center is being proposed to address the pressing labor shortage in the country. This initiative, spearheaded by Natural Waters of Viti Pte Limited, the company behind FIJI Water, aims to replicate its successful model from California. Marigold Moody, the assistant general counsel for the South Pacific, discussed this project at the Top Executives Conference 2024 (TO PEX2024) held at Sofitel Fiji Resort and Spa in Denarau, emphasizing that this venture is a significant investment in Fiji’s workforce.
Moody highlighted that one of her responsibilities involves managing special projects, including the career center, which focuses on training and skills development for Fiji’s labor market. As part of this effort, FIJI Water and NPDL Neptune, which share common ownership, are looking to enhance the training of local seafarers, addressing a notable skills gap within the Pacific Islands.
The company has already invested over FJ$140 million to expand its operations, increasing capacity by about 47%. Over the next decade, Moody stated that there will be a demand for additional personnel as they aim to utilize this increased capacity. Plans are underway to partner with Fiji National University to establish the career center in Suva, with the goal of launching it by 2025.
Moody elaborated that the initiative aims to equip people with job-ready skills, which is crucial in bridging the existing gap between training and employment needs. There will be a focus on designing curricula that align with the demands of local businesses. The center will not only cater to FIJI Water but also invite participation from other members of the manufacturing and marine sectors through an industry council.
This initiative reflects a positive step forward in addressing labor shortages and enhancing skill development in Fiji, creating a hopeful avenue for the local workforce to thrive in employment opportunities.
In summary, the establishment of a career center in Fiji aims to cultivate a skilled workforce, improving employability in various industries while addressing current labor shortages. This thoughtful collaboration between FIJI Water and local educational institutions is a promising development for the country’s economy and workforce future.
