FIJI Water has announced a significant environmental achievement, stating that nearly 70% of its global production is now packaged using recycled plastic materials. This commitment underscores the company’s dedication to sustainability and environmental responsibility, particularly in its home country of Fiji.
In a statement released by the FIJI Water Foundation, it was highlighted that the organization has invested over $5 million in energy efficiency initiatives throughout the Fiji Islands. This investment is part of a broader commitment to reduce plastic waste and promote recycling on the islands.
FIJI Water is a founding member of Mission Pacific, a recycling initiative established in 1999 in partnership with Coca-Cola. Mission Pacific has implemented a five-cent bottle deposit program and operates several buy-back centers in key cities like Suva, Lautoka, and Labasa. The company is actively collaborating with Mission Pacific on various initiatives aimed at enhancing plastic recycling infrastructure, including pop-up collection sites and awareness campaigns.
The company has urged the Fijian government to expedite the passage of container deposit legislation, which would further support recycling efforts. Meanwhile, FIJI Water is working with industry partners on a voluntary scheme to improve plastic recycling across the islands.
As part of its environmental efforts, FIJI Water’s shift to using recycled PET has led to a decrease of over 200 million virgin plastic bottles globally, resulting in a 60% reduction in carbon emissions compared to traditional plastic use. Furthermore, the company is engaged in a multi-year project focused on reducing the weight and thickness of its bottles while maintaining their structural integrity, achieving a 5-6% reduction in plastic weight since 2022.
In alignment with its sustainability strategy, FIJI Water is also implementing a 10-year energy plan aimed at reducing emissions and enhancing the efficiency of its bottling facility. Plans are in place to install a 10MW solar power system at the Yaqara plant, which could potentially supply 40% of the facility’s energy needs.
Overall, FIJI Water’s initiatives reflect a proactive approach to environmental conservation and showcase the potential for sustainable practices in the beverage industry. This progress not only contributes to preserving the natural beauty of Fiji but also sets an example for other companies to follow, highlighting the importance of corporate responsibility and innovation in fostering a greener future.
