The Water Authority of Fiji has issued a statement affirming the safety and reliability of its drinking water infrastructure, including modern plastic pipeline systems. This clarification comes in response to misleading claims circulating on social media that suggest these plastic water mains may be detrimental to public health.
WAF’s Chief Executive Officer, Seru Soderberg, highlighted that their infrastructure decisions adhere to stringent safety requirements and internationally recognized industry standards. He emphasized that the materials used in their drinking water systems—such as modified PVC (mPVC), high-density polyethylene (HDPE), and unplasticized PVC (uPVC)—are not only designed for transporting potable water but are also independently tested and quality assured.
Soderberg stated, “Modern pipeline materials used within our drinking water systems are specifically designed for potable water transport. They are independently tested, quality assured, and installed in accordance with Australian and New Zealand standards to ensure they do not release harmful substances or compromise water quality.” He further noted that these materials are employed globally by water utilities due to their durability, resistance to corrosion, and their ability to maintain water quality over extended service lives.
All pipeline products utilized by WAF are manufactured in compliance with strict Australian and New Zealand potable water standards, ensuring they are free from lead, chemically stable, and appropriate for long-term use in drinking water applications. Each infrastructure material undergoes rigorous assessments that verify its composition, structural integrity, and long-term performance in drinking water contexts.
Soderberg concluded, “These requirements ensure that pipeline materials used within WAF systems meet the stringent safety and quality benchmarks recognized across the region.” The Water Authority also noted ongoing public interest concerning microplastics and material safety, assuring the community that routine monitoring and testing of the supply networks are performed to guarantee the quality of water delivered to residents.
This proactive approach by the Water Authority of Fiji reinforces its commitment to providing clean and safe drinking water, alleviating concerns related to water quality and safety amid public discourse.
