The Water Authority of Fiji (WAF) has issued a statement reassuring customers about the safety of materials used in its drinking water network. This comes in response to claims circulating on social media suggesting that plastic water mains are responsible for the presence of harmful microplastics in drinking water.

WAF firmly stated that these assertions are inaccurate and lack support from engineering standards, public health guidance, or established industry practices. In addressing concerns, WAF Chief Executive Officer Seru Soderberg emphasized that all infrastructure decisions are made in accordance with strict safety and internationally recognized standards.

“Modern pipeline materials used within our drinking water systems are specifically designed for potable water transport,” Soderberg explained. These materials, which include mPVC, HDPE, and uPVC, are not only widely utilized by water utilities around the world but are also praised for their durability, corrosion resistance, and ability to maintain water quality over extended periods.

According to WAF, all products utilized in their systems are lead-free, chemically stable, and certified for long-term use in drinking water applications. The Authority acknowledged public unease regarding microplastics and reaffirmed that potable-grade materials undergo testing to ensure that any potential interaction with water stays within international health and safety thresholds.

In addition to these assurances, WAF conducts routine monitoring of its supply network to ensure compliance with Fiji National Drinking Water Quality standards. Soderberg reiterated WAF’s commitment to transparency and public safety, encouraging the public to seek verified information from official sources to combat the effects of misinformation.

This proactive approach by WAF is instrumental in maintaining public trust and ensuring the safety of drinking water, reflecting the Authority’s dedication to protecting public health while reassuring the community of the quality of their water supply.
