The Consumer Council of Fiji has issued a severe warning to consumers about the potential risks associated with online reward programs, membership-based giveaways, and social media promotions. These schemes often lure participants with promises of high-value prizes but may require payment or personal information in return, creating a precarious situation for unsuspecting individuals.
Chief Executive Seema Shandil pointed out that many such platforms lack transparency about how winners are selected and often impose various fees to enhance winning chances. For example, participants may pay a nominal fee for a “Basic” membership but are later urged to upgrade to “Gold” or “VIP” memberships for better odds, raising immediate concerns about legitimacy.
Shandil highlighted that the layered fee structure and the ambiguous selection processes create an environment rife with potential deception, leaving users unsure about whether anyone ever wins the advertised prizes. Under the Gaming Act of 2009, all lotteries and games of chance must operate under a valid license, ensuring that these activities remain transparent and fair.
This caution comes in light of similar concerns raised by the Fiji Police Force regarding online competitions, particularly a local texting contest that requires participants to pay a two-dollar entry fee for a chance to win a one-thousand-dollar prize. The Cybercrime Unit of the police has increased scrutiny over such promotions due to public inquiries about their authenticity, signaling a collective effort to protect residents from potential scams.
Past incidents involving local celebrities promoting cash giveaways that required monetary contributions have fostered skepticism and have underscored the need for consumer vigilance in the face of enticing online offers. The Fiji Police, in collaboration with other stakeholders, are active in developing guidelines to enhance the safety of digital transactions.
As both the Consumer Council and the Police work to raise awareness and promote education, the overarching goal is to protect consumers from fraud while fostering a secure online environment.
