The Western Disabled People’s Association recently organized a successful four-kilometre “walk and wheel” event aimed at raising funds to support the Western Disability Centre and its over 200 members. The event attracted association members, who were bolstered by volunteers from the Fiji Red Cross Society’s Lautoka branch, as they made their way from designated starting points towards Navutu.

Eloni Tuisabeto, the association president, shared that the proceeds from the event are typically allocated for practical necessities, including accessible transportation, specialized equipment, and upgrades to facilities. Tuisabeto, who has firsthand experience transitioning from being an able-bodied military officer to navigating life with a disability, expressed a strong commitment to the association’s mission. “When I retired in 2016, my first vision was to become the president of Western Disabled,” he remarked.

Under Tuisabeto’s leadership, the event has shifted from an annual occurrence to a more frequent initiative, aimed at fostering collaboration with local businesses since he took office on November 8. He mentioned that the association is currently self-funding its activities due to a lack of government grants, which he attested was partly due to past management issues within the organization. “I gave about 50 letters to all the businesspeople because the Government doesn’t give us any grant,” he noted.

To ensure the safety of participants during the event, members were organized into teams and positioned at strategic locations throughout the city to mitigate risks. Agu Tuinasau, interim president of the Red Cross Society Lautoka branch, confirmed that more than ten registered volunteers, including trained first aiders, provided assistance throughout the event. “We’re here to assist those that are members of the Western Disability,” he stated, emphasizing their dedication to ensuring a safe and supportive environment.

This initiative not only raises essential funds but also fosters community involvement and awareness for the challenges faced by people with disabilities. With continued efforts, the Western Disabled People’s Association is paving the way towards greater inclusivity and support for its members, showcasing a hopeful outlook for the future.
