The Human Rights and Anti-Discrimination Commission of Fiji has reiterated the nation’s commitment to safeguarding children from violence, particularly in the context of corporal punishment. In a recent statement, Director Loukinikini Lewaravu emphasized Fiji’s international obligations, being a State Party to both the Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC) and the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW), which mandate protection for children against all forms of violence.

Lewaravu stressed that these conventions require the nation to shield children from physical, emotional, and mental abuse. She pointed out that the best interests of the child must be the foremost consideration in any actions taken regarding discipline, advocating for methodologies that are non-violent, constructive, and respect the inherent dignity of the child.

Moreover, the Commission highlighted provisions in Fiji’s 2013 Constitution, which ensure each individual, including children, has the right to be free from torture, cruel, inhuman, and degrading treatment or punishment. This includes the assurance of personal security, free from violence in any setting—be it at home, school, or work.

Lewaravu made it clear that corporal punishment, which employs violent or degrading methods, is incompatible with these constitutional protections. She noted that cultural, traditional, or other justifications cannot condone practices that violate children’s rights.

While acknowledging the importance of family, culture, and tradition within Fijian society, the Commission advocated for positive discipline strategies as more effective means of fostering family cohesion without resorting to violent methods. The Commission urged community leaders, faith-based organizations, and families to engage in meaningful discussions on this critical issue.

Lewaravu concluded by assuring that the Commission is dedicated to collaborating with various stakeholders to enhance awareness of human rights protecting children, all while respecting cultural and religious values. This initiative serves as a positive step towards a more nurturing environment for the younger generation in Fiji.
