The time for new and aspiring volleyball players to lead the sport’s future in Fiji has arrived, as expressed by Sakiusa Naivana, a seasoned player representing Fiji and currently based in Palau. Naivana recently participated in the Fiji Volleyball Federation’s Hot Bread Kitchen Easter Championship, where he observed encouraging developments in the sport.

Competing with Suva Blue, Naivana noted a significant generational shift in volleyball players at the tournament. “We have a lot of hybrid, very tall, very explosive players,” he remarked, highlighting the evolving competition level. He asserted that it is now the youth’s moment to shine, emphasizing the importance of creating more competition and fostering discipline to “see a future for the youth of Fiji.”

Naivana’s journey in volleyball began long ago, with aspirations to don a national jersey. His experiences in higher-level competitions have deepened his understanding of the sport, and he expressed a desire for more local players to gain similar exposure. He remains optimistic about the sport’s future, believing that “there’s a better picture, a greater opportunity out there for volleyball.”

This sentiment echoes the reflections of fellow players in Fiji, such as Sally Aitcheson, who highlighted the growth of volleyball in the country regarding skills, fitness, and tournament organization. The ongoing dedication of the Fiji Volleyball Federation, especially in preparation for major events like the Pacific Mini Games, signifies a robust trajectory for local volleyball.

Naivana’s and others’ experiences demonstrate that Fiji’s volleyball community is on an upward trend, with a healthy mix of young talent and seasoned players paving the way for success. With efforts to enhance skill levels and competitive spirit, the future looks bright for volleyball in Fiji, showcasing the enthusiasm and potential that could elevate the sport on domestic and international stages.
