Residents of Tavualevu Village, one of the largest villages in Fiji, have decided to forgo Christmas preparations this year due to warnings from the National Disaster Management Office (NDMO) regarding adverse weather conditions expected over the coming days. Villagers, particularly those living near the Nasivi River, have taken precautionary measures by relocating to higher ground as floodwaters are anticipated to rise.
Jope Bakewa, a villager, shared insights on the potential impact of heavy rains, highlighting that their low-lying area is particularly susceptible to flooding caused by waters flowing down from the Nadarivatu highlands. Despite the festive season, Bakewa stressed the critical importance of adhering to weather warnings, expressing gratitude that there have been no fatalities during the current adverse weather.
He noted that the community is accustomed to dealing with flooding and prepares accordingly, always staying vigilant and avoiding crossing swollen rivers.
In light of the heavy rain forecast, the Fiji Meteorological Services has issued a warning for various regions, including western divisions and several island groups. The NDMO continues to urge communities to remain cautious, emphasizing the need for motorists to exercise extra care during this rainy period.
Residents are strongly advised against crossing or swimming in flooded waters, and those venturing out to sea are urged to check weather conditions first due to strong winds and unpredictable changes.
