Villagers in Tavualevu have postponed their Christmas celebrations following guidance from the National Disaster Management Office (NDMO) regarding expected severe weather conditions in the western division over the coming days.

Residents living near the Nasivi River have relocated to higher ground in preparation for potential flooding that may affect their homes. Tavualevu Village, one of the largest in Fiji, is led by nine turaga ni koro (headmen), and one resident, Jope Bakewa, highlighted that the low-lying areas they inhabit are particularly susceptible to flooding during heavy rainfall.

Mr. Bakewa remarked on the disappointment of having to pause festive preparations, such as their traditional ‘lovo’, but emphasized the importance of adhering to weather advisories for safety. He expressed gratitude that no lives have been lost amid the adverse conditions, noting that the community is accustomed to facing heavy floods and takes necessary precautions.

The NDMO has urged communities to remain vigilant as continued rainfall is anticipated throughout the holiday season. The Fiji Meteorological Services has issued a heavy rain warning covering various areas, including Momi to Nadi, Lautoka, Ba, Tavua, Rakiraki, and other regions.

With expectations of flooding, the public is encouraged to follow safety advisories strictly, with warnings against crossing or swimming in floodwaters where levels exceed knee height. Authorities are also advising motorists to exercise caution while driving during this period of heavy rain.

In addition, sailors and the public are reminded to check marine forecasts prior to heading out, as conditions can rapidly change due to strong winds.

The NDMO has called for community members to look out for their neighbors, particularly those in vulnerable positions, ensuring everyone stays informed about safety measures. The NDMO is collaborating with the Fiji Meteorological Service to keep track of the situation and provide updates as necessary.

Despite the challenging conditions, the community’s resilience and proactive measures highlight the spirit of togetherness during this festive season. It’s a time to not only celebrate but also to support each other in navigating difficulties, reinforcing bonds and ensuring safety for all.
