The village of Levuka-i-Daku on Matuku Island in the Lau group is taking diligent steps to monitor its youth studying in Viti Levu, aiming to prevent involvement in drug-related activities. This vigilance comes in response to a concerning rise in drug cases, particularly among young people.
President of the village development committee, Taito Coriakula, has issued a stern warning that youths participating in illegal behaviors will face measures leading to their return to the village. He emphasized the importance of maintaining discipline and ensuring that the primary purpose of their education is not overshadowed by distractions from crime.
“During our weekly meetings, we closely monitor the well-being of our youth. It is essential that they stay aligned with their educational objectives. If any young individual fails to meet their academic commitments, the committee will step in and manage their return to our home,” Coriakula stated.
Corroborating previous community efforts seen across Levuka and other islands, such as Lakeba and Vuma, Coriakula reiterated the importance of fostering a safe environment for the youth. Leaders from these regions have also shared concerns about drug infiltration, noting how it disrupts community cohesion and diminishes participation in village activities. Like the proactive approaches taken in Lakeba, where strict regulations around drug possession involve counseling and potential expulsion for repeat offenders, Levuka-i-Daku is seeking to instill traditional cultural values and community engagement in its youth.
Levuka-i-Daku boasts over 200 young residents, a substantial number across the seven islands of Matuku. Coriakula believes that by reinforcing connections to their cultural heritage and promoting communal work, the youth can find purpose and direction away from the risks of drug use.
