Vatia’s waters have recently come under scrutiny for their potential involvement in drug trafficking, as pointed out by Vatutavui Village headman Niko Sucuvakaivalu. He noted a concerning trend, remarking on the increased number of yachts anchoring offshore, which raises suspicions regarding their activities. “This isn’t an isolated incident; it’s been happening for several years,” he stated.

The local community was recently stunned by a significant drug bust along their shores, an event that many residents did not anticipate, especially given their traditional connection to the qoliqoli, or fishing grounds. When asked why the villagers had not reported suspicious behavior, Mr. Sucuvakaivalu expressed a sense of confusion, saying, “We do not really know what was going on.”

He went on to highlight that there was previous awareness regarding drug-related activities, particularly following a police initiative last year that aimed to educate the youth about the dangers of drugs, focusing on incidents elsewhere, such as Nadi. However, the headman admitted they were unprepared for the realization that their own shores could serve as a transit point for drug cartels.

“As we learned about drug seizures in other locations, it became clear that our area is not immune. It was a shock to recognize that visitors in the past might have been connected to these ongoing activities,” he added. This revelation has prompted a more vigilant approach among villagers as they confront the unsettling reality of drug trafficking in their own environment.

The community’s growing awareness and proactive measures in response to this situation reflect a hopeful shift toward addressing the issue collectively, fostering a stronger neighborhood watch and communication with law enforcement.
