On July 4, 1984, *The Fiji Times* reported on a significant housing initiative spearheaded by Tui Labasa Ratu Tevita Qomate, which successfully opened 15 new homes in two villages close to Labasa. This ambitious project, costing $69,000 and financed through a loan from the Housing Authority, aimed to uplift the living standards of the communities in Mataniwai and Raranibulubulu, located approximately 20 kilometers north of town.
The development introduced two-bedroom timber houses, addressing the pressing need for better housing among 23 villagers who had previously lived in makeshift structures. Ratu Tevita indicated that the loan would be repaid through the villagers’ biannual land rents, emphasizing the prudent investment of these funds. He remarked, “The members of the Yavusa Kalou, I feel, have invested wisely,” highlighting the positive shift in community dynamics.
The chief of the Yavusa, Ratu Viliame Lautiki, echoed his sentiments, praising the housing scheme as an exemplary use of financial resources. “My people are very happy because they now have permanent roofs over their heads,” he stated, reflecting the joy and relief of the villagers.
During a ceremonial event celebrating the homes’ completion, the community expressed their gratitude by presenting a tabua to Ratu Tevita, acknowledging his pivotal role in this housing venture. He encouraged the villagers to take pride in their new homes and to continue working diligently for the progression of their communities.
Ratu Tevita also extended an invitation to other village leaders in Labasa, suggesting they consider participating in similar housing schemes to enhance their villages. “The facilities are there for a housing loan, and the final decision rests with the respective village chiefs,” he noted, fostering a spirit of collaboration and mutual growth among village elders.
This successful housing initiative marks a hopeful step towards improving living conditions and fostering community pride in the Labasa region.
