Police Commissioner Rusiate Tudravu has announced that investigations into the recently leaked Viber messages are advancing, with direct cooperation from the Australian Federal Police (AFP). The leaked messages allege that several senior police officers were in communication with individuals involved in illegal drug activities.
At this stage, Tudravu revealed that the seven officers named in the allegations have not been suspended due to the absence of verified evidence. He emphasized the need for a thorough investigation, underscoring that due process must be followed before taking any administrative action. “These allegations are causing emotional stress to our officers. We must ensure due process and evidence before taking any administrative action,” he stated.
Additionally, Tudravu confirmed plans for a senior Criminal Investigations Division (CID) officer to travel to Sydney. This decision comes after the woman who posted the Viber messages agreed to provide a statement and share any relevant evidence. He highlighted the crucial role of international collaboration in effectively addressing these serious allegations.
“We are doing our job,” Tudravu reassured the public, stressing the commitment of the police to investigate the source of the messages thoroughly. He noted that the AFP’s assistance includes logistical and investigatory support, as well as ensuring the safety of the woman who disclosed the information.
This proactive approach reflects a commitment to maintaining integrity within the police force and addressing any potential misconduct with seriousness and diligence. The cooperation with Australian authorities signifies the importance of international partnerships in tackling issues that cross borders, ultimately strengthening law enforcement efforts in both countries.
