Fiji VAT Crackdown: Regulators Flag Traders as Prices Show Relief

The Fijian Competition and Consumer Commission (FCCC) has recently identified 590 traders for verification and potential investigation concerning compliance with the updated Value Added Tax (VAT) rate of 12.5 percent. Out of this group, 184 traders have been confirmed as compliant, while 179 were issued Requisition for Information Notices, and 16 have received warnings regarding potential prosecution for non-compliance.

Ongoing monitoring by the FCCC indicates that while some businesses have adjusted to the new VAT rate, discrepancies in pricing have been observed. FCCC CEO Senikavika Jiuta has underscored the importance of compliance with the Fijian Competition and Consumer Commission Act 2010, stating that deliberate non-compliance will not be tolerated and could lead to prosecution.

Surveys conducted across 18 key sectors, including food, hardware, pharmaceuticals, and automotive, from June to October 2025, suggest a positive trend in price reductions for essential items, with notable decreases in prices for chicken portions, corned lamb, and noodles following the VAT reform. Jiuta emphasized the FCCC’s commitment to protecting consumers and ensuring a fair market.

The FCCC has ramped up enforcement through its Price Monitoring and Enforcement Taskforce in response to the government’s announcement of VAT and duty reductions in the 2025-2026 National Budget. The initiative is designed to ensure that consumers experience the benefits of tax cuts directly. This collaborative effort involves the FCCC working alongside the Ministry of Finance, Fiji Revenue and Customs Service, and the Consumer Council of Fiji.

As the regulatory landscape evolves, there is an increasing focus on holding businesses accountable for fair pricing practices. Significant monitoring efforts are expected to continue, aimed at fostering a transparent and equitable marketplace. The proactive stance of the FCCC indicates a hopeful outlook for consumers, suggesting that these measures will lead to a market environment where tax benefits are truly realized by the public. The ongoing joint efforts reflect a deep commitment to consumer rights and market fairness, paving the way for a more equitable economic future for all Fijians.
