Fiji’s suicide crisis requires urgent action, as highlighted by Justice Minister Siromi Turaga during World Suicide Prevention Day in Lautoka. Turaga pointed out the alarming global statistic of over 740,000 people dying by suicide each year, with Fiji contributing more than 550 deaths in the last five years. Emphasizing the importance of shifting the narrative from stigma to support, he said open conversations about suicide can be lifesaving.

Turaga’s call underscores the need for collective efforts among families, educational institutions, workplaces, and faith-based groups to build support networks. His remarks draw attention to statistics from the Fiji Police Force, revealing the Western Division’s significant contribution of 43% to all suicide cases and 57% to attempted suicides between 2020 and August 2025, figures significantly above the national average.

He reiterated the government’s commitment to bolstering mental health services and incorporating crisis response protocols into the justice system. Turaga emphasized that reducing the stigma and enhancing collaboration with community groups, healthcare providers, and religious organizations are critical for suicide prevention.

Similar concerns have been voiced by Dr. Balram Pundit and Health Minister Dr. Atonio Lalabalavu, who also advocated for greater investment in mental health resources and support. They emphasized recognizing suicide as a broader public issue involving various social determinants such as poverty, unemployment, and discrimination. Lalabalavu highlighted the need for collaboration across different sectors and communities to create a more understanding and supportive environment, stressing that suicide is preventable if approached comprehensively.

The articles collectively stress the dire need for strategic interventions and resource allocation to address the mental health crisis in Fiji effectively. As community leaders and officials urge creating open spaces for dialogue, the hope is to build stronger, more empathetic communities capable of safeguarding the vulnerable and preventing further loss of life.
