The Fiji Women’s Rights Movement (FWRM) has urgently called for the nationwide implementation of Comprehensive Sexuality Education (CSE) in schools amidst troubling statistics of nearly 500 teenage pregnancies recorded over just six months. According to FWRM, these figures highlight a systemic failure in protecting young women and girls, underscored by a lack of comprehensive, rights-based education on sexuality, consent, and relationships.
Nalini Singh, Executive Director of FWRM, emphasized the dire need for accurate and age-appropriate information, pointing out that the current silence and shame surrounding sexuality education only perpetuate inequality and disempowerment. Singh remarked that the young age at which girls are becoming pregnant is less a matter of personal choice and more a result of systemic denial of information and autonomy.
FWRM has long advocated for CSE, aligning with feminist organizations and communities who argue that the omission of such education perpetuates control over women’s and girls’ bodies, increasing their susceptibility to exploitation and early pregnancy. Singh asserts that CSE is not a mere add-on but a crucial tool for justice, enabling young people to make informed decisions and affirm their rights.
Statistical data supports FWRM’s stance. Previous years have seen about 1,000 teenage pregnancies annually, revealing a significant gap in education on bodily autonomy, contraception, and healthy relationships. The alarming rise indicates a pressing need for education systems to adapt and incorporate comprehensive sexuality and reproductive health education.
FWRM is committed to collaborating with the Ministry of Education, Ministry of Health, civil society groups, and communities to ensure the urgent roll-out of CSE. By fostering informed decision-making and empowerment, this initiative aims to confront the root causes of teenage pregnancies and support a healthier, more informed generation.
The concerted push for CSE reflects a broader movement towards creating supportive educational environments that equip Fijian youth with the knowledge to navigate complex societal issues. Addressing these challenges through comprehensive education offers a pathway to reducing health risks and fostering a generation capable of making autonomous and informed choices, thus contributing to the well-being of the broader community.
