The Permanent Secretary for the Ministry of Information, Eseta Nadakuitavuki, has underscored the urgent need for Fiji to prioritize digital media literacy, emphasizing that with the rise of misinformation, cyberbullying, and online scams, the nation can no longer view this education as optional. Speaking at the Digital Media Literacy Training session held in Suva, she highlighted the increasing complexity associated with the growth of social media platforms and the associated risks.

Nadakuitavuki pointed out that mobile phones have transformed from simple communication devices into multifaceted platforms serving as newsrooms, marketplaces, classrooms, and public forums. The understanding of digital literacy, she argues, must evolve beyond basic online engagement, stressing that individuals must become champions against the misuse of digital platforms.

She articulated the pressing issues of false narratives, fake accounts, AI-generated content, and the non-consensual sharing of intimate images, noting that these challenges are not mere digital issues but rather significant human problems that affect families and communities directly. Vulnerable groups, particularly women and young people, often bear the brunt of online abuse, pointing to a critical need for heightened awareness and education.

Moreover, Nadakuitavuki emphasized the importance of fostering critical thinking skills, verifying information before dissemination, and understanding legal responsibilities related to online expression. She stated that while freedom of expression is crucial, it must come with accountability.

To create a safer digital environment, Nadakuitavuki called for a coordinated national effort, urging all citizens to take responsibility for the integrity of Fiji’s online space. With a collective commitment to enhancing digital literacy, there is potential for fostering a healthier and more responsible online community.
