The Fiji Hotel and Tourism Association (FHTA) is advocating for urgent reform of outdated liquor laws to ensure a more equitable and safer environment for both residents and tourists. The association points out that the existing regulations have not been updated in decades and are ill-suited for the modern landscape of communities and the growing tourism sector.

Fantasha Lockington, the Chief Executive of FHTA, highlighted that the current legal framework permits liquor outlets to operate near residential areas, often with minimal oversight. This situation leads to public order issues, with instances of drinking occurring in proximity to these establishments, which places added pressure on enforcement agencies.

Lockington emphasized that the social repercussions of these outdated laws are felt by families, neighborhoods, and businesses on a daily basis. The complexities involved in the annual license renewal process for hotels, which entails multiple document submissions despite the existence of a digital portal aimed at streamlining this task, add to the frustration. Hotels face higher fees and stricter trading hours, while less-regulated outlets operate with fewer checks.

The FHTA is calling for a balanced regulatory framework that not only protects communities but also fosters responsible business practices. Lockington stated that the current discrepancies in regulations are neither fair nor sensible.

To address these issues, the FHTA is urging relevant authorities to modernize the Liquor Act. This would help ensure consistency in regulations, improve enforcement visibility, and create a level playing field for all operators. A contemporary regulatory framework is seen as vital for safeguarding communities, supporting businesses that adhere to high standards, and promoting Fiji as a safe and well-regulated tourism destination.

This push for reform reflects a hopeful vision for a more cohesive approach to liquor regulation that benefits all stakeholders involved.
