Speaker of Parliament Filimone Jitoko has urged global leaders to uphold humanitarian norms and strengthen humanitarian action during crises at the 151st Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) Assembly. His address centered on the theme “Upholding humanitarian norms and supporting humanitarian action in times of crisis,” underlining the importance of inclusive and coordinated responses to global emergencies.
While commending the recent peace in Gaza and Palestine, Jitoko expressed hope that this newfound stability could endure and serve as a catalyst for reconciliation efforts worldwide. He highlighted the pressing realities faced by Small Island Developing States like Fiji, where the climate crisis manifests not as a distant threat but as a daily challenge, impacting communities through intensifying cyclones and rising sea levels.
Moreover, Mr. Jitoko drew attention to Fiji’s leadership in humanitarian and climate action, which is reflected in its progressive legislation, including the Climate Change Act of 2021 and the Environmental Levy Act of 2017. He mentioned the Pacific Ocean being endorsed as an ‘Ocean of Peace’ by regional leaders, reinforcing the collective commitment to fostering harmony in the face of environmental and humanitarian challenges.
Additionally, Jitoko emphasized Fiji’s dedication to transparency, democracy, and climate justice, stressing that emergency powers should always respect human rights. He called for the Assembly to drive bold, coordinated action, advocating for constructive dialogue that leads to tangible progress.
This call echoes Fiji’s previous commitments and actions in international circles, such as the emphasis on multilateralism articulated during other global forums like the United Nations General Assembly. In prior discussions, Fiji’s resilience in the face of climate change and its proactive approach, including being the first to ratify the Paris Agreement, has been noted. The ongoing recognition of Fiji’s transformative leadership in addressing climate challenges serves not only as an inspiration for other nations but also underscores the necessity for global collaboration in confronting shared threats.
The spirit of hope articulated by Jitoko reflects an overarching belief in the potential for collective progress through dialogue and decisive action, positioning Fiji as a key player in the global humanitarian and climate governance landscape.
