The Ministry of Employment in Fiji is calling on employers to demonstrate compassion and flexibility as the country begins its recovery from extreme weather conditions. Permanent Secretary for Employment, Productivity and Workplace Relations, Maritino Nemani, highlighted the disparities in how workers are impacted, noting that while some may return to work without issue, many others are facing severe challenges, including the loss of homes and livelihoods.
“Some workers may return unaffected, but others may have lost their homes, livelihoods or have been impacted in some other way. We ask employers to be understanding, offering flexible arrangements or leave where needed,” Mr. Nemani stated, emphasizing the importance of understanding individual circumstances.
In addition to showing empathy, the Permanent Secretary urged open communication between employees and employers, especially for those who are struggling with the transition back to work. He stressed that workplace safety should remain a paramount concern as operations resume, reminding businesses of their responsibilities under Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) standards.
“No employee should be asked to work in unsafe conditions. Employers must take the necessary steps to ensure that workplaces are safe before asking staff to return,” he asserted, reinforcing the idea that the health and safety of staff is critical during recovery efforts.
Mr. Nemani further emphasized that the true strength of Fiji lies in its people. “Buildings, equipment and infrastructure can always be rebuilt, but people are the true strength of our workplaces and our nation. This is something we must never forget, especially in times like these,” he added.
The Ministry committed to ongoing support for both workers and employers throughout this recovery phase, focusing on ensuring fair treatment and promoting safe working environments across all sectors. This collaborative approach is essential in fostering resilience and healing within the affected communities as Fiji moves forward.
