Employers in Fiji are being called upon to demonstrate compassion and flexibility as the nation begins to recover from the recent cyclone. Maritino Nemani, the Permanent Secretary for Employment, Productivity and Industrial Relations, emphasized that while some employees may return to work without any impact, others may have suffered significant losses, including homes and livelihoods.

Nemani asks employers to consider flexible work arrangements and to provide leave options where necessary to support affected workers during this challenging time. He stressed the importance of ensuring that workplaces meet Occupational Health and Safety standards before resuming operations, underscoring that no employee should be compelled to work in unsafe conditions.

Highlighting the significance of human resources, Nemani stated that while buildings, equipment, and infrastructure can be rebuilt after such disasters, the people who comprise the workforce are the true backbone of both businesses and the country. He reassured that the Ministry will continue its efforts to support both workers and employers throughout the recovery phase, promoting equitable treatment and safe working environments.

This initiative not only prioritizes the well-being of employees but also fosters a resilient and united workforce, crucial for the overall recovery of Fiji.
