The Pacific Freedom Forum (PFF) has urged the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) to release former journalist Charles Charters from detention, emphasizing the nation’s obligations under the United Nations Convention against Corruption (UNCAC).

PFF chair Robert Iroga made this appeal in a statement, expressing deep concern over Charters’ ongoing remand and highlighting the importance of protecting journalistic integrity. Supported by the global media freedom organization IFEX, Iroga underscored the critical role of the media in safeguarding sources, particularly whistleblowers who expose misuse of power without proper channels to voice their concerns.

“It is essential for FICAC to acknowledge that it, too, must operate under scrutiny, just as it expects from others. We remain hopeful that Fiji’s judicial system will rectify the adverse effects these actions have had on public perception and trust,” Iroga stated. He emphasized this situation presents an opportunity for Fiji’s judiciary to reaffirm public confidence and remind FICAC of its core mission.

Iroga expressed PFF’s solidarity with the Fiji Media Alliance, noting that as a signatory to UNCAC, Fiji is obligated to implement measures for the protection of whistleblowers. He referred to Article 33 of UNCAC, which specifically addresses the safeguarding of individuals who report corruption in good faith from unfair treatment.

PFF also pointed out that prior assessments of Fiji’s compliance with UNCAC have commended its anti-corruption initiatives while also calling attention to the necessity for improved data privacy protections and the establishment of comprehensive whistleblower protection laws. This ongoing dialogue reiterates the commitment to uphold transparency and integrity within Fiji’s governance structures, aiming to foster a more trustworthy environment for those who courageously come forward to report wrongdoing.
