The president of the Fiji Primary Schools Athletics Association, Patrick Bower, has called on primary schools across the nation to employ dedicated physical education (PE) teachers. Bower noted that only a handful of primary schools possess PE teachers, with the International School Suva being one of the few exceptions.
During the first day of the Fiji Primary Schools Tuckers Ice Cream Games, Bower observed a remarkable display of talent from young athletes, but he expressed concern about the lack of emphasis on physical education, indicating it has been overlooked in both primary and secondary education. He emphasized that physical education encompasses more than just traditional sports like rugby, soccer, and netball; it should be a comprehensive program promoting the overall development of children.
Bower pointed out the scarcity of physical education teachers at the primary level, while secondary schools typically have them. He underlined the crucial role these professionals play in nurturing young athletes and their holistic growth.
While acknowledging some organizational hiccups, such as delayed entries and a slow start to the event, Bower praised the dedication of the officials and coaches, as well as the impressive performances of the athletes.
