Fiji’s Centre for Disease Control has enhanced its laboratory capabilities, paving the way for quicker and more accurate detection of viral infections. This upgrade is part of a strategic initiative to bolster the nation’s health response system and was made possible through partnerships with international organizations.

Assistant Minister for Health Penioni Ravunawa emphasized that the newly installed modular sequencing system equips Fiji to tackle health threats more efficiently than ever. The advancements also extend to food safety, facilitating the testing of both imported and local products. This proactive approach is designed to minimize the risk of foodborne illnesses, a necessity underscored by recent incidents, including a case in Melbourne where contaminated cooked food led to widespread illness within a family.

Ravunawa pointed out the need for proper logistics to conduct effective food sample testing, ensuring that all food, both imported and locally consumed, meets safety standards. He recognized these improvements as a significant milestone for public health in Fiji, reflecting a decade-long aspiration now becoming a reality.

This development not only enhances the country’s health security but also demonstrates a commitment to safeguarding the well-being of its citizens and promoting overall food safety. With these advancements, Fiji is poised to respond more adeptly to health challenges and ensure a healthier future for its population.
