Fiji Upgrades Infant Hearing Screening with New V500 G2 System

The Frank Hilton Organization (FHO) has made a significant advancement in enhancing infant hearing services in Fiji with the introduction of new screening equipment for its audiology programme. This launch took place at the Lautoka Health Centre MCH Clinic and was made possible through the support of the Direct Aid Program from the Australian High Commission, Compassion Network Australia, and the Ministry of Health and Medical Services.

Since 2015, FHO has been the sole provider of infant hearing screening in Fiji, operating out of CWM Hospital. These essential screenings help detect hearing issues in newborns and infants, allowing families access to early care and support. Over the past decade, the screening process has utilized the Vivosonic Integrity V500 G1 system, which has benefited thousands of families in Fiji. However, due to an increasing demand for services and the need for enhanced accuracy, an upgrade was deemed necessary.

Thanks to funding from the Compassion Network and the Direct Aid Program, FHO has successfully acquired the new Vivosonic Integrity V500 G2 system. The total investment for this upgrade amounted to $63,072.34, with contributions of $23,370 from the Compassion Network and $41,000 from DFAT. This collaborative effort exemplifies a shared commitment to providing every child with the best possible start in life.

The V500 G2 system performs two critical screening tests: the Automated Auditory Brainstem Response (AABR) test, which measures the response of the hearing nerve and brainstem to sound, and the Distortion Product Otoacoustic Emissions (DPOAE) test, which assesses the function of the inner ear. Both tests play a vital role in early detection of hearing issues, especially for infants who may not exhibit clear signs of hearing difficulties.

For numerous families across Fiji, early screening can result in transformative changes. FHO reports that this new equipment will facilitate timely assessments for more babies, particularly as services expand within the Western Division. The organization expressed sincere gratitude to all partners whose contributions made this upgrade possible.

The launch of this advanced equipment marks another critical step towards improving access to early childhood health services, promoting inclusive development for children throughout Fiji. This initiative holds great promise for enhancing the quality of care and support available to young children in need.
