Fiji’s Minister for Women, Children and Social Protection, Sashi Kiran, delivered an empowering message at the launch of the Women in Construction and Trade Fiji (WICAT) website, stating, “YOU are not only breaking barriers but building the foundations of a more inclusive and resilient Fiji.” The event coincided with Women in Construction Week 2026 and attracted industry leaders, development partners, and women who are pioneering change in the country’s construction and trade sectors.
Minister Kiran lauded WICAT’s evolution since its inception in 2021, highlighting its role in fostering a national movement that supports women navigating traditionally male-dominated industries. She recognized the persistent challenges women face but emphasized their resilience and the benefits of their participation in construction and infrastructure to the entire nation.
WICAT founder Julianne Verma characterized the website launch as a landmark achievement, noting it symbolizes the progress and determination of women in this journey. She underscored WICAT’s mission of empowerment and collaboration, expressing gratitude for male allies in advancing the industry. “Being a woman in the construction and trade industry is not easy. Yet across this sector, one theme unites us: we are strong,” remarked Verma.
Verma, who is set to represent Fiji at the upcoming Sydney Build 2026 Expo in April, recognized the support of the organization’s industry partners and sponsors. The story of the youngest member, 22-year-old Cecilia Sumasafu, resonated in the room as she shared her experience transitioning from a stigmatized female architecture student to landing an internship at ATELIER 153. “Anyone can be in this field if you have a passion for it,” Sumasafu affirmed, attributing her success to WICAT’s mentorship.
The newly established website aims to enhance the visibility of women in construction and trade, bolster networking and mentorship opportunities, and serve as a platform for recognition at both the national and regional levels. As Women in Construction Week 2026 progresses, WICAT stands as a beacon of leadership, solidarity, and the significant contributions of women who are integral to shaping Fiji’s future.
