New road traffic laws and penalties are now in effect as of January 22, 2026, following the gazetting of the Land Transport (Fees and Penalties) (Amendment) Regulations 2026. These amendments, made under the Land Transport Act 1998 after consultations with the Land Transport Authority, introduce revised fines, demerit points, and suspension penalties aimed at several traffic violations.

A significant update involves the introduction of penalties for failure to stop and weigh, with the first offence resulting in a fixed penalty of $300 and one demerit point. This penalty escalates to $600 and two demerit points for a second offence, and further to $900 with three demerit points for subsequent violations, with even higher maximum penalties applicable.

The regulations have also adjusted penalties for illegal parking or stopping, which now incur a $100 fixed penalty and one demerit point. Maximum penalties could include hefty fines and possible driving suspension.

Speeding fines have been restructured as well. Drivers exceeding the speed limit by less than 15 km/h will face a $50 fine and one demerit point. Those speeding by 15–29 km/h will be fined $75 and receive two demerit points, while those exceeding the limit by 30 km/h or more will incur a fine of $100 and three demerit points. Additionally, all speeding categories may be subject to higher maximum penalties and potential licence suspension.

These updates were formally signed into law by Ro Filipe Tuisawau, Minister for Public Works, Meteorological Services and Transport. Authorities are encouraging motorists to become familiar with these updated penalties, emphasizing that these changes are designed to enhance road safety, enforce compliance, and reduce dangerous driving behavior across Fiji. This proactive approach reflects a commitment to improving the safety and well-being of all road users.
