Fiji Unveils Two-Phase Plan to Modernize Rural Water and Sanitation Backed by Climate Resilience Fund

Minister for Public Works, Ro Filipe Tuisawau, has announced that Fiji’s Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Plan is set to significantly improve water and sanitation services in rural areas. Speaking at a workshop focused on finalizing the master plan, he highlighted that this initiative aligns with national policies such as the National Development Plan 2025–2029 and the Water Strategy 2050.

The plan aims to ensure that water projects are coordinated and sustainable, underpinned by a strong commitment to the Rural Water and Sanitation Policy. It will be executed in two distinct phases: Phase 1, spanning from 2025 to 2030, will focus on establishing safe and dependable water systems, while Phase 2, from 2031 to 2050, will enhance these services through improved planning and innovative approaches.

Ro Filipe emphasized the need to shift the focus from merely constructing new projects to maintaining existing infrastructure, ensuring effective performance monitoring, and fostering climate resilience. Successful execution of this strategy is contingent upon robust collaboration among the Department of Water, Sewage, the new Rural Water Unit, and the Water Authority of Fiji. He also pointed out that measures will be implemented for better data quality and the establishment of digital systems to enhance decision-making processes.

To address climate challenges and natural disasters, a proposed Climate Resilience Water and Sanitation Fund will play a pivotal role in supporting rural water systems. Tuisawau stressed that achieving the goals set out in the plan will require concerted efforts and partnerships not only among government bodies but also with communities, the private sector, NGOs, and other stakeholders.

This latest initiative builds upon previous efforts, such as the collaboration with UNICEF currently assessing rural water needs and the successful Vusama Water Project which improved clean water access for two villages. Such practical steps underline the government’s consistent commitment to enhancing water services and public health across Fiji, offering a hopeful outlook for the future. By addressing these crucial concerns, the plan not only aims to uplift the quality of life in rural communities but also fosters a more resilient and sustainable water supply system for the entire nation.
