Fiji has introduced a national framework aimed at guiding the sustainable utilization and safeguarding of its ocean resources over the next decade, marking a significant step towards a more sustainable future. The Fiji Blue Economy Framework 2025–2035 was unveiled in collaboration with the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change and Blue Prosperity Fiji.
This framework outlines a balanced approach to ocean-based development, ensuring that economic growth does not come at the expense of environmental integrity. Minister for Environment and Climate Change Mosese Bulitavu emphasized Fiji’s duty to preserve its natural resources for future generations, describing land and life as invaluable gifts that require careful stewardship.
The new framework is designed to build a robust foundation for expanding the ocean economy while protecting marine ecosystems and providing long-term benefits to local communities. Following its endorsement by the Cabinet, this document serves as a national roadmap aimed at promoting sustainable and inclusive economic development that is ocean-focused.
Dr. Sivendra Michael, Permanent Secretary for Environment and Climate Change, noted that the framework is not a detailed action plan but a guiding document that outlines essential principles for Blue Economy development. It directs policy across different sectors, allowing ministries and organizations to tailor their actions to their specific mandates.
Developed through extensive consultations, the framework incorporates insights from communities, government bodies, civil society, and the private sector. It aligns with Fiji’s National Development Plan and National Ocean Policy while also supporting the country’s commitments under the Paris Agreement.
Key objectives of the framework include the sustainable management of 100 percent of Fiji’s ocean space and the full protection of at least 30 percent of it by the year 2030. The framework prioritizes marine conservation, sustainable fisheries, climate-resilient tourism, renewable ocean energy, and conservation-led enterprises.
This initiative holds the promise of fostering sustainable practices that not only benefit the environment but also enhance the livelihoods of coastal communities in Fiji. The optimism surrounding the framework suggests a commitment to preserving natural resources for generations to come while pursuing economic growth.
