The Fijian government is making strides towards its commitment to provide every citizen with access to clean, safe, and reliable water and sanitation services. Today, Ro Filipe Tuisawau, the Minister for Public Works, Meteorological Services and Transport, marked a significant milestone by officiating the Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Master Plan Stakeholder Workshop at the Holiday Inn in Suva. This event signals the finalization of Fiji’s first-ever Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Master Plan.
The new Master Plan aims to serve as a strategic roadmap designed to meet Sustainable Development Goal 6, which focuses on ensuring clean water and sanitation for all by 2030. Tuisawau highlighted the government’s dedication to principles of equality, inclusion, and fostering community well-being. He noted that the plan outlines Fiji’s long-term direction, investment priorities, and necessary institutional responsibilities to ensure that no community is overlooked in the pursuit of universal access to safe water and improved sanitation.
Supported by UNICEF, the Master Plan outlines several key objectives: upgrading village water systems, expanding access in rural and maritime communities, strengthening sanitation infrastructure to improve public health, encouraging rainwater harvesting and solar-powered water systems, and building resilience to natural disasters such as droughts and cyclones.
UNICEF Pacific Representative Ms. Roshni Basu commended the initiative, emphasizing that it promotes equity, dignity, and health for every child. This landmark Master Plan is a testament to the government’s commitment to bridging the gap between rural and urban areas, paving the way towards a healthier, safer, and more resilient future for all Fijians.
Reflecting on previous initiatives that have laid the groundwork for this development, such as the successful Vusama Water Project which improved access to clean water for two villages, it is evident that the government’s sustained efforts to enhance water services are yielding positive results. By addressing vital concerns related to water supply and sanitation, the plan not only aims to uplift the quality of life in rural communities but also fosters a sustainable water supply system for the entire nation.
The continued focus on enhancing essential water services offers a hopeful outlook for Fiji’s future, championing the health and well-being of its citizens and empowering communities across the nation.
