The Pacific Specialist Healthcare (PSH) Hospital in Nadi has unveiled its Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) chamber, a groundbreaking treatment that aims to aid patients with chronic wounds, burns, decompression sickness, and diabetic foot ulcers. The launch event, attended by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, Biman Prasad, was heralded as a significant advancement in addressing the challenges posed by non-communicable diseases (NCDs) in Fiji.

During his address, Prof. Prasad reiterated the urgent healthcare issues facing the nation, particularly diabetes, which has become the leading cause of premature deaths, with a concerning statistic that one amputation linked to diabetes occurs every 12 hours. “The launch of HBOT is a major step forward in improving health outcomes and reducing the need for amputations,” he declared, highlighting the importance of innovative therapies in the health landscape of Fiji.

The HBOT service, which will operate around the clock, is designed to accelerate patient recovery and significantly lessen the requirement for amputations due to diabetes-related complications. This new healthcare option not only seeks to serve the Fijian population but also aims to attract patients from other Pacific Island nations, positioning Fiji as a key player in regional healthcare.

Prof. Prasad expressed optimism that the introduction of the HBOT chamber would foster new collaborations with healthcare providers in the region and boost medical tourism, thereby enhancing Fiji’s healthcare infrastructure. Additionally, the launch coincided with the introduction of the Sugar Cane Growers Fund (SCGF) Loyalty Program, which aims to improve healthcare access for active cane farmers by providing discounts.

This advancement signifies a hopeful trajectory for Fiji’s healthcare system, offering improved treatment options and a proactive response to the growing challenges of chronic diseases. The investment in advanced medical technologies like HBOT not only addresses immediate health needs but also lays a foundation for a healthier future for the population, ultimately enhancing the overall quality of life in Fiji.

In summary, the introduction of Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy at PSH represents a transformative step in healthcare provision, promising benefits not just for local communities but for patients across the Pacific, and showcasing Fiji’s commitment to enhancing health outcomes through innovation.
