Fiji Unveils Revolutionary Hyperbaric Therapy to Combat Diabetes and Save Limbs

The Pacific Specialist Healthcare (PSH) Hospital in Nadi has officially launched its Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) chamber, a significant advancement in addressing chronic health issues like chronic wounds, burns, decompression sickness, and diabetic foot ulcers. The inauguration event was officiated by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance Biman Prasad, who highlighted the critical need for this innovative healthcare service in Fiji, where non-communicable diseases, particularly diabetes, represent a growing challenge.

During his address, Prasad underscored the alarming statistic that a diabetes-related amputation occurs every 12 hours in Fiji, stressing the urgent need for effective treatment options. He stated, “The launch of HBOT is a major step forward in improving health outcomes and reducing the need for amputations.” The HBOT chamber will operate 24/7, aiming to enhance patient recovery times and significantly decrease the instances of amputations associated with diabetes-related complications.

Not only is this service designed for local Fijians, but it also aims to attract patients from other Pacific Island nations, positioning Fiji as a leader in regional healthcare. This initiative reflects Fiji’s commitment to bolstering its healthcare infrastructure and could lead to enhanced collaborations with regional healthcare providers, boosting medical tourism in the process.

Additionally, the launch coincided with the introduction of the Sugar Cane Growers Fund (SCGF) Loyalty Program, which provides healthcare discounts to active cane farmers in Fiji, showcasing a commitment to improving healthcare accessibility for rural communities.

This development signifies a hopeful trajectory for Fiji’s healthcare system, where the introduction of advanced medical technologies like HBOT not only addresses immediate health needs but also lays the groundwork for a healthier future. By investing in such innovative treatment options, Fiji is not just tackling chronic diseases but is also enhancing the overall quality of life for its residents and making strides toward better health management for all.
