Fiji Unveils Next-Gen Polymer Banknotes With Tactile Accessibility and High-Tech Security

Fiji recently unveiled a new series of polymer banknotes that incorporate innovative designs, enhancing both their aesthetics and functionality. The new notes are made from a durable substrate and feature a range of upgraded security measures aimed at preventing counterfeiting, while also improving accessibility for visually impaired individuals.

All denominations—$5, $10, $20, $50, and $100—include a consistent set of security features. Among these are tactile lines and dots, specifically designed to aid recognition by the blind and visually impaired. The tactile lines, which vary in number from 4 to 12 depending on the denomination, run along the short edges of the notes, while tactile dots can be found in the bottom right corner, with counts ranging from 2 to 10.

Further enhancing the notes’ security are intaglio prints that allow users to feel raised images and text, including the word “Fiji,” the denomination, and signature. Notably, a shadow image of an iTaukei man becomes visible when the note is held up to light. The transparent window in each denomination displays intricate symbols of Fijian culture, such as a Kato ni Masima and a Foa.

Under ultraviolet light, some areas of the banknote exhibit a glowing fluorescence, and hidden microtext can be discovered through magnification. A micro-optical stripe enhances the banknotes’ security, featuring dynamic imagery of the Coat of Arms of Fiji and other regional symbols that shift when the note is tilted.

The introduction of this advanced currency not only enriches Fiji’s banking system but also reflects a commitment to embracing modern technology for enhanced safety and accessibility. This thoughtful redesign not only aims to curb counterfeiting but also to ensure that all individuals, regardless of ability, can engage confidently with Fiji’s currency.
