Protecting traffic officers from the escalating dangers on the roads has become a paramount focus for law enforcement agencies. Assistant Commissioner of Police Operations Kasiano Vusonilawe emphasized the daily risks that officers encounter while directing traffic and conducting roadside checks.

This statement was made in light of a newly established partnership between the Fiji Police Force and the Land Transport Authority, aimed at enhancing enforcement operations over the upcoming two months. ACP Vusonilawe highlighted that a range of safety measures have been implemented to safeguard officers operating in busy and hazardous traffic environments.

Among these measures are high visibility reflective vests, clearly marked patrol vehicles with activated warning lights, traffic cones, barricades, and coordinated team operations designed to bolster officer safety. He elaborated on a strategic approach where one officer monitors the flow of traffic while the other is on the road, ensuring that they remain vigilant about approaching vehicles and potential risks. This dual-layered safety method enables officers to assess threats before undertaking their duties.

The Assistant Commissioner underlined the critical nature of these protocols in mitigating crashes, injuries, fatalities, and traffic violations, stressing the importance of fostering a collective commitment to road safety.

Despite the initiatives, ACP Vusonilawe expressed concern over troubling trends observed on the roads. These include the overloading of public service vehicles, particularly buses carrying schoolchildren, attempts by motorists to navigate flooded roads, speeding, fatigue-related incidents, reckless overtaking, and loss of vehicle control. He stated that non-compliant road users would face both regulatory and criminal implications.

Additionally, he reassured that the increased visibility of law enforcement serves as a reminder of the necessity of road laws, which are a vital component in protecting lives, and they must be honored by all motorists. The ongoing partnership between the Fiji Police Force and the Land Transport Authority aims not only to improve enforcement but also to promote a culture of shared responsibility regarding road safety, fostering a safer environment for both officers and the public.
