Minister for Women, Children, and Social Protection Sashi Kiran has announced a national call to action as Fiji commemorates the International Day for Prevention of Child Abuse and Neglect and World Children’s Day. This year’s observance is particularly significant in light of the alarming statistics regarding child protection in the nation.
Between 2019 and 2024, the National CWA Database recorded over 10,000 cases of child abuse and neglect, highlighting a growing concern for the welfare of children in Fiji. Kiran pointed out that approximately 60-70% of these cases consist of neglect, physical abuse, and sexual abuse.
“Child abuse and neglect remain urgent challenges affecting not only individual children but the future of entire communities,” Kiran asserted, underscoring the critical nature of the situation. The Minister added that this year also marks the commencement of two pivotal laws—the Child Safety and Protection Act and the Child Justice Act—designed to create a clearer framework for child protection and establish a more child-friendly justice system.
These new laws aim to ensure the safeguarding of children from all forms of abuse while ensuring that children in conflict with the law receive respectful treatment focused on rehabilitation. Kiran emphasized that these legal measures form a robust foundation for a national child protection framework.
The Minister further highlighted the collective responsibility of the community in fostering a safe environment for children, stating, “Every child deserves the security of a loving family, systems that protect them, and the opportunity to grow up in an environment that is free from violence and exploitation.”
To support this initiative, the Department of Children is implementing frangipani treehouses and child-friendly spaces across Fiji’s communities and workplaces. Kiran praised these developments as a “practical and powerful investment in children’s wellbeing,” nurturing young minds and providing spaces that protect their futures.
Kiran concluded her speech by expressing gratitude to parents, teachers, and stakeholders, emphasizing that every act of care and guidance contributes significantly to building a safer Fiji for all children. The collective efforts being made reflect a hopeful outlook towards improving child welfare and protection across the nation.
