The government of Fiji is intensifying its initiatives to tackle the escalating termite infestation affecting regions such as Lautoka and Labasa, which has resulted in significant damage to homes, infrastructure, agricultural crops, and household items. Fisheries and Forests Minister Alitia Bainivalu has addressed the issue, highlighting the threat posed by two highly destructive species of termites, notably the Asian subterranean termite, recognized as one of the most harmful species globally, with some nests containing up to two million individual termites.
Minister Bainivalu emphasized the necessity of a multi-faceted approach to combat this issue. She has announced that the Ministry is enhancing inspections of timber treatment facilities, promoting public awareness to educate citizens on proper timber usage, and advocating for building designs that can minimize vulnerability to termite invasions. She stated, “Termites thrive when timber is easily accessible or incorrectly used in construction. That is why our protection measures must be multi-layered, incorporating proper building design, correct timber specifications, the use of durable or treated timber, and physical barriers to limit termite access.”
The Minister also noted that relying solely on chemical treatments is insufficient; establishing high construction standards and adhering to accurate timber specifications are equally critical in the fight against termites. Additionally, the Ministry is exploring new regulations for timber marketing and collaborating closely with the Fijian Competition and Consumer Commission to ensure that timber retailers comply with the necessary standards, enabling consumers to purchase appropriate products that can effectively safeguard their homes from termite damage.
This comprehensive approach signifies a positive step forward in addressing a pressing issue that poses a threat to both the integrity of structures and the agricultural productivity of the regions affected. By combining efforts in education, regulation, and construction practices, the government aims to significantly reduce the impact of termite infestations in Fiji.
